Nyuma Harrison was born in Zambia at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). She left Zambia at age six when her father was assigned to work abroad. To her advantage, her parents always ensured that Nyuma returned to Zambia to reconnect with her native community and to maintain an awareness of progress and gaps in the country’s development.
The tradition of “going back and giving back” (especially to the less-advantaged) is a life- lesson Nyuma carried with her into adulthood. Previously, while on breaks from her studies or work in the U.S (where she still resides), Nyuma would return with friends and colleagues from abroad to visit and make random donations to local schools and orphanages. While the interactions were always well-meaning and rewarding, it became increasingly clear that any impact hoped for was, at best, short-lived.
This revelation motivated Nyuma, a highly experienced emergency nurse provider with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Howard University, and an Executive Master’s Degree in Leadership from Georgetown University’s School of Business, to begin working towards the creation of smarter and more sustainable community-based health programs. And thus, The Nyuma Harrison Foundation was born.
The Nyuma Harrison Foundation is excited to contribute a dynamic NGO that believes that the way to better health for Zambia’s most marginalized, is not only through the provision of services and goods. But, also through the consistent engagement of target populations and by strategically placing young Zambians (living in Zambia) in senior leadership positions.
The Nyuma Harrison Foundation is registered with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services and endorsed by the Ministry of Health. The foundation also has a registered for taxpayer identification number with the Zambia Revenue Authority.
